Iran Fired Drones and Missiles at US Forces Inside the UAE. Abu Dhabi Is Also the Horn of Africa's Biggest Gulf Investor.
US Central Command said its forces struck two Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps rocket-launcher positions on Larak Island on 30 August after observing preparations to fire sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz, ending a 31-night pause in American strikes on Iranian soil. Iran responded within hours, launching drones and ballistic missiles at US positions in the United Arab Emirates and Jordan; the UAE says it intercepted a drone over its territorial waters and disputes reports that its Al Minhad Air Base was hit directly. The exchange is the latest chapter in a war, now in its seventh month, that has already killed 13 people in the UAE in a separate bombardment last spring. It also lands squarely on the Horn of Africa's doorstep: the UAE is Somaliland's largest foreign investor, through a $442 million stake in Berbera port that Mogadishu has no say over, and a state Somalia's federal government formally severed all agreements with in January, accusing it of violating Somali sovereignty. A Gulf patron already estranged from Mogadishu and now trading fire with Iran is a harder partner for the Horn to plan around, on both sides of that estrangement.

Saudi Arabia's Escape Route Around Iran's Blockade Just Took a Houthi Missile. It Runs Along the Same Coast the Horn of Africa's Navies Are Already Too Stretched to Protect.
A Houthi ballistic missile struck the Saudi-owned crude tanker Amzan on 24 August, 63 nautical miles off the Red Sea port of Yanbu, setting it ablaze in the most direct hit yet on the route Saudi Arabia has used to move oil around Iran's six-month blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The Houthis called it enforcement of the naval blockade they declared against Saudi Arabia on 20 July; Bahri, the tanker's operator, said the crew was unhurt. The strike lands on the same stretch of water where FIKIR Institute has already documented naval patrols stretched thin enough to let Somali pirates hijack six ships since April, and it is now the Hormuz bypass route itself under fire, not just the blockade built around it.

The Houthi Blockade of Saudi Arabia Is a Horn of Africa Story, Not Just a Gulf One
Yemen's Houthi movement declared a full naval blockade of Saudi Arabia on 20 July, struck two Saudi tankers off Al Shuqaiq days later, and has since pushed Bab el-Mandeb transits down by roughly a quarter and Red Sea war-risk premiums sharply higher.
