Somalia Beat Famine in 2022 With $2.2 Billion From Donors. This Time It Has Roughly $300 Million, and UNICEF Says the Country Is Close Again.
UNICEF spokesperson James Elder said this week that Somalia is nearing famine conditions for the second time since 2022. Behind the statement sits a joint UN food-security assessment showing 6 million people in crisis-level hunger, a Doctors Without Borders report that malnutrition funding has collapsed by more than 80 percent, and a $852 million UN appeal that by mid-2026 was covered at roughly 15 percent, a fraction of what averted the last famine.
